Porteous Class
Our class is named after Beilby Porteus (1731–1809), who once served as the Rector of Hunton before later becoming the Bishop of London. Porteus was known for standing up for what was right and believing strongly in fairness, kindness and the power of education. He even spoke out against slavery at a time when very few people did, helping to make the world a better place. We are proud that our class is named after someone who believed so strongly in helping others and improving people’s lives.
Welcome to Porteous Class, our exciting Year 3 and Year 4 classroom where curiosity, creativity and adventure are at the heart of everything we do. We love exploring fascinating topics and bringing our learning to life in fun and memorable ways. Throughout the year we investigate incredible natural wonders like volcanoes, step back in time to discover the traditions and inventions of Ancient China, and explore the myths, battles and achievements of Ancient Greece. Our learning is filled with hands-on activities, creative projects, discussions and challenges that help us truly experience the topics we study rather than just reading about them.
In Porteous Class we also begin learning French, practising new words and phrases so we can start to speak another language and learn about a different culture. Our PE days take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, when we enjoy developing our skills, staying active and working together as a team. Homework is given out on Fridays and should be returned by Wednesday so that we can share and celebrate our learning together. Each Friday morning we have our spelling test, giving us the chance to show how much we have practised during the week.
Year 4 pupils also take part in the national Multiplication Tables Check in June, which helps show how confident they are with their times tables up to 12 × 12. We practise our tables regularly through games like TT Rockstars, challenges and fun activities so that everyone feels confident and ready- we all love hit the button!
Porteous Class is a lively, welcoming and hardworking classroom where we love discovering new things, challenging ourselves and celebrating our achievements together. Every day is an opportunity for an adventure in learning, and we are excited to see all the fantastic things we will achieve this year.
